Return to insect pests

Corn rootworm adult  (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, Diabrotica barberi) is primarily a problem where corn is grown continuously in the same fields. Rootworm beetles begin to emerge from the soil in July and feed on ear silks, pollen, and the upper surface of leaves. When numerous, they can clip silks and interfere with pollination. The ¼-inch beetle is green with black margins. The female has three black stripes; the male’s wings are mostly black.

Management:

  • Crop rotation and sprays for corn earworm usually control this pest.
  • Corn rootworm may be more of a problem with reduced sprays programs for Bt sweet corn.
